Managing Directors
James W. Hutchin, CPCU, President and Founder
Jim founded Alba in 2001. He recognized that the insurance segment had a real need for certain services that were best delivered by a group of experienced and qualified professionals. He used his knowledge of the industry to assemble and leverage a unique group of industry professionals who can deliver these services to clients. His particular areas of expertise include executive management, strategic planning and new product development.
Jim is Clinical Professor at the Fox School of Business, where he directs the Global Entrepreneurship in Technology and is leading the Initiative for Sustainability Strategies.
He began his career in 1979 with a major U.S. insurance broker, where he held a number of key management positions in the United States, Italy, Singapore and Mexico. He went on to run the global business practice at two major insurance brokerage firms. Until January of 2001, he was President of Capital Risk LLC, a joint venture of London-based Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group, and the Blackstone Group, New York.
Prior to his tenure at Capital Risk, Jim served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of International Risk Management Group Risk Advisory and Captive Management Services. IRMG was at the time the largest independent captive manager in the industry, with premium through-put of $3 billion, and total assets of the captives under management in excess of $10 billion.
Jim's undergraduate work was completed at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia, with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Asian studies. He earned a Masters of International Management, with honors, at the American Graduate School of International Management ("Thunderbird").
He also attended "The Executive Program" at the Darden Graduate School of Business, University of Virginia. He obtained the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation in 1981, and he was a founding member of the Society of CPCU's International Section's Governing Committee.
He has been a guest lecturer at the American Graduate School of International Management ("Thunderbird"), Swarthmore College, Temple University, and the Darden Graduate School of Business, University of Virginia.
Mr. Hutchin has addressed audiences on the subject of Globalization at numerous seminars and conferences, including Insurance-Days (I-Days) in Philadelphia, Charlotte, and Memphis, Regional and National CPCU and Risk and Insurance Management Society meetings, as well as numerous conferences in Europe.
He has also addressed audiences on the management of the human element in business process re-engineering, at meetings such as "The Second World Conference on Integrated Design and Process Technology" in Austin, Texas.
More than twenty of his articles and interviews appear in prominent industry and business publications.

Norman A. Baglini, Ph.D., CPCU, CLU, AU, Are, Managing Director
Norm is Professor of Risk Management, Insurance and Business Ethics at Temple University in Philadelphia where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses. He provides Alba with outstanding leadership in academic areas such as principles of insurance, global insurance, professional education and business ethics.
He is President Emeritus and Life Trustee of the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters, the Insurance Institute of America and the Insurance Institute for Applied Ethics, where he served for twenty-five years, eleven as chief executive officer. Upon his retirement, the Board of Trustees established an ethics endowment in his name to support the projects of the Insurance Institute for Applied Ethics.
Norm started his career with the Aetna Life & Casualty Company and subsequently spent time with Marsh and McLennan.
He is the author of
Risk Management in International Corporations and
Global Risk Management and a co-author of the early editions of two other books:
Principles of Property and Liability Underwriting and
Insurance Company Operations as well as numerous articles and professional papers in risk management, professional education and business ethics.
His invited speeches and papers at risk management and insurance industry conferences and academic meetings have been presented in 46 states and 13 countries.
Norm is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Geneva Association and an associate editor of the
Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance Issues and Practice, the
John Liner Review, and
Insurance Research and Practice, the journal of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Great Britain.
A consultant and trainer, he has developed corporate ethics programs for S & P 500 companies and has designed and developed corporate risk management and insurance training programs for insurance companies and brokers. Before joining the faculty at Temple University, he taught undergraduate courses and executive education at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
Norm earned B. S. and M.B.A. degrees from the University of Rhode Island and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Temple University.

Gary L. German, CPA, Managing Director
Gary provides Alba with a unique blend of technical expertise and practical application in the areas of accounting and finance. He has over 25 years of experience in the insurance industry and has held key financial management positions, primarily in the brokerage segment. His particular areas of expertise include cost efficiencies, operating systems, forensic accounting, auditing and financial analysis.
Gary began his career in 1973 with Price Waterhouse & Co. where he earned the designation of Certified Public Accountant. He is currently licensed in the State of North Carolina, Cert. #8814. His business address is 959 Nauvasse Trail, Fort Mill, SC 29715.
As both an external and internal auditor he gained broad exposure to a number of industries, particularly banking, healthcare, insurance and manufacturing, (including a temporary assignment as Controller of a foreign facility).
In 1984 he became Regional CFO with the international insurance brokerage firm of Johnson & Higgins (J&H). He was ultimately responsible for 17 branch offices with revenues in excess of $260 million, ($4 billion in premium volume).
In 1997 Gary joined International Risk Management Group (IRMG) as Chief Financial Officer, (CFO). IRMG was, at the time, the largest independent captive manager in the industry, with premium through-put of $3 billion, and total assets of the captives under management in excess of $10 billion.
During his time with J&H Gary developed seminars in financial analysis. The presentations demonstrated the use of basic financial analytical tools and concepts for use by non-financial experts to enhance the use of business information. He has subsequently given multiple presentations of his "Financial Analysis for Non-Accountants" seminar to numerous groups within the insurance, academic and collegiate communities.
Gary's undergraduate work was completed at Wake Forest University, with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He was a three-year starter on the football team, (including the 1970 Atlantic Coast Conference Champions), and was co-captain his senior year.
Formal speaking engagements include the United Way, the Financial Executives' Institute, the Institute of Management Accountants and various colleges and universities. He gave presentations on "The Evolution of Process Management" and "Using Fun in Business" at the World Conference on Integrated Design and Process Technology in Berlin, Germany.

Richard A. Hinckley, Jr., Managing Director
Rick provides clients of Alba Advisors, LLC with strategic consulting advice as respects global insurance-related and other financial services ventures. His emphasis areas are financial product development, financial functions, profit improvement, strategic business analysis and merger and acquisitions.
Rick began his career in 1973 as a technologist specializing in telecommunications, database and electronic countermeasures for naval intelligence with a major computer consulting company.
He later became CFO of Cigna's International and Broker division and led the financial functions of the $4.5 billion revenue, 6,000 employee operation in over 200 countries. The division was the largest profit producer in Cigna at $220 million. He also performed the role of chief satellite underwriter leading a pool which controlled one third of world satellite insurance capacity.
Rick was also instrumental in creating the American Express Purchase Protection plan as well as developing and underwriting other innovative financial risk products including letter of credit alternatives, Internet B2B counterparty risk, healthcare receivables collection risk, residual value insurance and credit enhancements.
He was awarded a patent for developing stochastic financial algorithms as a basis for the healthcare receivables collection risk product. He founded Kemper Risk Finance and was president of KRF until June 2001.
Rick earned a BA in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973. His course work included probability and statistics, abstract algebra, analysis and number theory. He subsequently earned a MBA in Finance and Decision Sciences from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, while concurrently earning a MSEE in Computer and Information Science from the Moore School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1976.
Rick has been a guest lecturer at the Fox Graduate School of Business, Temple University, speaking on risk finance issues, and teaches statistical analysis at both Temple and Philadelphia University.
He has presented papers at the Insurance Accounting and Statistics Association and Risk and Insurance Management Society conferences on topics ranging from financial reporting to alternative risk transfer mechanisms.
He has been involved in the community in a number of roles including treasurer of the Wharton Club of Philadelphia, Vice Chairman of Junior Achievement of the Delaware Valley, board member of St. Joseph's University Business School and as the financial officer Friends of Penn Track. He has also been a member of the Association for Systems Management and the American Mathematical Association.

Alan has over 40 years of international management experience in the financial services industry which includes CEO and senior management positions in Australia, Canada, Europe, Luxembourg and the United States.
His broad experience encompasses the development and implementation of country specific and global strategic plans, company start ups, mergers and acquisitions and operational improvement. Mr. May is currently non executive chairman of two companies in Australia and a director of two Hong Kong based companies.

Laureen Regan, Ph.D., Advisor
Laureen Regan is an Associate Professor in the Fox School of Business, Temple University, and Academic Director of full-time MBA Programs. She has been recognized for excellence in both teaching and research.
Her research interests include insurance distribution channels, regulation and public policy, strategy and enterprise risk management. Her research has been published in top outlets, including the
Journal of Law and Economics, the
Journal of Risk and Insurance,
Proceedings of the AEI-Brookings Institute, the
Handbook of Insurance Economics, and
Risk Management and Insurance Review. Laureen was recognized for research excellence by the American Risk and Insurance Association when she won the James S. Kemper Foundation Award.
She is also an experienced speaker and trainer and has conducted a variety of well-received education seminars for organizations such as Marsh, Samsung, American International Group, Motorola Broadband, the Israel Phoenix Group, and the Casualty Actuary Society, among others.
Laureen earned her undergraduate degree in Finance and Economics from the University of Pittsburgh, and her Masters and Ph.D. from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

R. Bryan Tilden, CIC, C.P.C.U., CLU, ARM, ALCM, ChFC, Advisor
Bryan is a National Lecturer and Expert Witness in the field of insurance. Prior to starting his own firm, he was the Director of Technical Affairs and Director of Education for IIANC.
Since entering the insurance business in 1974 as an Account Executive, he has worked for major brokerage firms on Fortune 100 accounts around the nation. He specialized in large retention programs, utilizing the international insurance marketplace.
Bryan has been active in insurance education as a grading panel member for the Insurance Institute of America and the American Institute for Property Liability Underwriters. He has served on the Education and Technical Committees for the IIANC and worked with the State of North Carolina on pre-licensing and continuing education.
Bryan has been a frequent contributor to the
John Liner Letter. He has taught in schools for both the PIA and IIA, been a speaker at RIMS and C.P.C.U. meetings, and has spoken at various conventions. He is a National Faculty Member for the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors.

Eric A. Wiening, CPCU, ARM, AU, AAI, API, Advisor
Eric is an adjunct professor of insurance at The American College and an independent consultant with over 35 years of insurance experience including more than 30 years in insurance education.
He is a primary author of 10 insurance and risk management textbooks, which have been studied by well over 250,000 students.
In addition to his professional designations, Eric has an M.S. from Temple University, where he majored in insurance and risk management. He is an active member of the CPCU Society and was recently appointed to a second term on its national Ethics Committee.
